As your constituent and a producer, I am writing to ask that you support Canadian farmers and ranchers and vote in favour of Bill C-234, An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.

Agriculture is the backbone of Canada. Canadian farmers and ranchers are helping to feed the world while driving Canada’s economy and supporting rural communities. Farmers and ranchers use propane and natural gas in our daily operations - to dry our grain, irrigate our land, and heat and cool our barns and greenhouses. A carbon price on fuel used for these necessary practices hinders our ability to provide safe, sustainable food to Canadians and the growing world.

The cost of the carbon tax places a significant burden on farmers like me. Without a viable alternative, we have no other option but to use existing farm fuels, such as natural gas and propane. Inflation, and the high costs of inputs, like fertilizer and fuel, are already narrowing our margins and limiting our ability to remain competitive.

A vote for Bill C-234 is also a vote for sustainable agriculture. C-234 will allow Canada’s farmers, ranchers and growers to continue investing in technologies and equipment that will drive efficiencies in our operations, while keeping our food supply secure. Considering rising inflation, supply chain disruptions and growing global tensions, we need to prioritize farm livelihoods, our food security, and competitiveness.

These are essential exemptions. By supporting this bill, you can do your part to promote the livelihoods of producers, the sustainability and growth of the agriculture sector, and protect Canadian food security.
